Zinc oxide is used in batteries, plastics, cements, and lubricants. ZnO is also a semiconductor with wide bandgap properties making it an excellent choice for LED lighting and sensor applications.
Zinc oxide (ZnO) is a white crystalline solid that has unique electric and chemical properties. It is widely used as an additive in various materials including polymers, cements, glass, paints, pigments, foods, fire retardants, etc. Recently, zinc oxide witnessed increased usage in semiconductors due to good material transparency and wide bandgap (∼3.3 eV) properties. It is also used in industrial processes, for example, in the removal (sequestering) of hydrogen sulfide from natural gas. ZnO is a somewhat soft material that exhibits high thermal conductivity, acts as semiconductor (temperature dependent), can be used as a catalyst carrier, and exhibits exceptional thermal shock resistance.
